Genre. A genre is a literary kind or form, the name given to a family, sequence, or category of works on the basis of a common history or combination of shared characteristics. These might be formal (such as narrative or dialogue), thematic (novels of manners, autobiography, gothic fiction), stylistic (a peculiar kind of diction, stanza, or imagery), rhetorical end (praise, ridicule, instruction) or principle of organization (essay, magazine, treatise). |
