Samuel Johnson

A Dictionary of the English Language

While not the first dictionary of the English language, Johnson's was the first to be constructed on modern principles, with illustrative quotations drawn from a wide range of literary works. It was completed over a period of nine years, with the assistance of a small group of assistants. Published in two folio volumes in 1755, it was updates and reprinted throughout the nineteenth century.
